ATTORNEY PROFILE

Ms. Matthews represents health care professionals in insurance and contract disputes, Medicaid/Medicare billing/fraudulent claims disputes, and in licensure defense before the various Louisiana professional licensing boards. She also enjoys an estate planning practice that focuses on the needs of non-traditional families, especially the protections needed by lesbian and gay families, and handles probate of both large and small estates.
Ms. Matthews received her undergraduate degree from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute (now Louisiana Tech University) in 1969, earned a Masters in Library Science from Louisiana State University in 1976, and received her Juris Doctorate magna cum laude from Tulane University in 1988. While in law school, she was the Senior Managing Editor of the Tulane Law Review and was awarded the Order of the Coif. Before joining Martzell & Bickford, Ms. Matthews served as law clerk to Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice John A. Dixon, Jr.
Ms. Matthews is a member of the American, Louisiana State, and New Orleans Bar Associations and of the New Orleans Estate Planning Council. In addition to these organizations, Ms. Matthews is a member and former director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana and is a founding director of AIDSLaw of Louisiana, Inc. She is a cooperating attorney/local counsel for Lambda Legal and is active in several gay and lesbian civic rights advocacy and political organizations on the local and national levels.
