John R. Martzell (1937-2007)

Mr. Martzell is a trial lawyer practicing in the areas of civil and criminal litigation. He received a bachelors degree from the University of Notre Dame and his law degree from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 1961, where he served as a law review editor. Upon graduating from law school, Mr. Martzell served as a law clerk to the Honorable J. Skelly Wright, United States District Court Judge and to the Honorable Frank B. Ellis, United States District Court Judge.

From 1966 to 1972, he served as director of the Louisiana Commission on Human Relations, Rights and Responsibilities and was special counsel to Governor John W. McKeithen. Mr. Martzell's practice in the areas of civil and criminal litigation emphasizes trial practice, although he is highly regarded as an appellate advocate as well. Mr. Martzell has also served various government bodies as special counsel, including the New Orleans City Council during its 1986 special investigation into sales tax collections.

Mr. Martzell has also been active in various professional organizations. From 1982 to 1984, he served as Chairman of the Department of Public Affairs of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He is a past president of the Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association and has served on its Board of Governors. In recognition of his advocacy skills, Mr. Martzell has also been elected to the American College of Trial Lawyers. Mr. Martzell is a lecturer at Louisiana State University Law School, Tulane Law School, and Notre Dame Law School. He also speaks at numerous continuing legal education seminars and lectures for special projects of the American Bar Association.

Mr. Martzell is admitted to practice in all federal courts in Louisiana, the Eastern and Southern Districts of Texas, and all federal courts in Mississippi. He is admitted to the United Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States.
